About Me
Professional Stuff
In December, 2016 I retired as president of the American Fire Sprinkler Association (AFSA) based in Dallas, Texas. I started there in 1988. From 1985 through 1988, I was on the staff of the Home and Apartment Builders Association of Metro Dallas. I also held the position of Director of Public Affairs for the Association of Oilwell Servicing Contractors from 1977 to 1985. Prior to 1977, I spent six years on the staff of U.S. Congressman Dale Milford, 24th Congressional District of Texas.
I was a founder, and served on the Steering Committee, of the Home Fire Sprinkler Coalition -- an organization composed of the American Fire Sprinkler Association, National Fire Protection Association, National Fire Sprinkler Association, and others. I also served on the National Advisory Committee of the Congressional Fire Services Institute, an organization charged with educating members of Congress about fire and life safety issues. From 2002 to 2008 I was elected to serve on the Board of Directors of the National Fire Protection Association, a 80,000-member international organization dedicated to life safety through the development of building codes and standards and public education programs. In the August 2002 I was designated "Person of the Year" for the fire sprinkler industry by Fire Protection Contractor Magazine, and in 2016 I was honored to receive the Parmelee Award, the highest award for service from the American Fire Sprinkler Association.
